How to Drain a Hot Water Boiler System

1. Prepare the Area

Before you begin, make sure to clear the area around the boiler. It’s also a good idea to have a bucket or hose ready to catch the water that will be drained. Additionally, ensure you have access to the main water supply shut-off valve and the drain valve located at the bottom of the boiler.

2. Turn Off the Boiler

Locate the thermostat and set it to the off position. If your boiler has a power supply, switch it off to prevent any accidental activation during the draining process. This step is crucial for safety and to avoid any further heating of the water while you are working on the system.

3. Shut Off the Water Supply

Next, locate the cold water supply valve that feeds the boiler, usually found on the pipe leading into the unit. Turn this valve clockwise to shut off the water supply. This step will prevent any new water from entering the boiler during the draining process.

4. Connect a Hose to the Drain Valve
