How Steam is Produced by a Boiler
Boilers are essential components in various industries, providing steam for heating, power generation, and processing applications. The journey begins with feedwater, typically sourced from a nearby water supply or recovery system. Heating the feedwater is accomplished through different methods, depending on the type of boiler. In a fire-tube boiler, hot gases produced by burning fuel pass through tubes submerged in water. This transfers heat from the gases to the water, raising its temperature. Conversely, in a water-tube boiler, water flows through tubes that are heated externally by the combustion gases. Both types aim to reach the boiling point of water, which is 100 degrees Celsius at standard atmospheric pressure.
Once the water reaches its boiling point, it begins to vaporize into steam. This transformation absorbs a considerable amount of energy, known as latent heat, which helps maintain high steam temperatures and pressures. The steam produced can be either saturated or superheated, depending on the boiler design and operational requirements. Saturated steam is at equilibrium with water and is commonly used for heating. In contrast, superheated steam, which goes beyond the boiling point without increasing pressure, is often utilized in power generation to drive turbines efficiently.
The steam produced is then collected in a steam chamber or header and distributed throughout the facility. Its uses are diverse heating buildings, powering machinery, producing electricity, or serving as a core component in industrial processes such as sterilization or chemical manufacturing.

Boilers are equipped with various safety devices, including pressure relief valves and water level controls, to prevent overpressure and dry firing, respectively. Regular maintenance and inspections are crucial to ensure these safety features function correctly and to avoid breakdowns or hazardous incidents.
